My name is Melody Schofield and I'm a CrossFit Athlete! Before my CrossFit career started about two and a half years ago, my main focus was Obstacle racing and Ninja Warrior training. After my first CrossFit class I fell more and more in love with the sport and decided to put 110% of my athletic focus into it. I have been doing it competitively for a little over a year and love every second of it.
My goals as a coach are to share the passion I have for the sport with others and to get others where they would like to be! I absolutely love setting and hitting goals, so if you're attending the classes I coach get ready to set a few!
I'm an optimist, believe in hard work, and am a lover of life!
After discovering Crossfit in the summer of 2012, Joey Tortora quickly fell in love with everything it had to offer. He was a runner and avid gym-goer looking for a new push. He saw a video of The Crossfit Games and was determined to have a future in this sport. In 2014, he began his competition career and qualified for at his first Crossfit Regional. Soon after this, he took his love of the sport one step further and started coaching. For the past 5 years, Joey has tied his two loves together and has been teaching people how to move and live well while at the same time becoming a 5-year Regional Qualifier and a 2-time Crossfit Games Team athlete.
The knowledge he has attained over the years, in both competing and coaching, continuously helps to sharpen his skills. He loves the group setting of a Crossfit class and believes that is where true fitness is created. Beyond the group classes, he has further used his skills in the areas of 1-on-1 training sessions and monthly personalized programming. Whatever your goals may be, Joey will back them 100% and help you attain them.
"Friends! That is the phrase I always use to start my class. I believe that at the core of a coach-to-client relationship, friendship is a must. Creating that friendship is an ability I pride myself on.”

Looking back on it, I found CrossFit at the exact right time I needed to...summer of 2013. I’d spent the last 9 years of my life in a touring rock-band. My body was beat up. My health was a mess. You name it, I’d done it...a lot. We always hear about the ways CrossFit changes lives, well it saved mine.
From March 2014 to October 2018 I was the head coach at CrossFit Bala. Six days a week, all told more than 3,400 classes. I had the opportunity to train a number of NBA players using functional fitness principles and worked alongside the amazingly talented kids at the High Performance Tennis Academy. But mostly day-to-day regular folks who want to live long and healthy. I loved coaching then, I still love it now.
All the experience has allowed me to grow as a coach and a professional in countless ways. I’ve learned that good coaching isn’t about “Fran” times or 500# deadlifts. It’s about connecting with other people and providing them their best hour of the day.
We all put our phones down, laugh, complain, and ultimately sweat it out as a group of different people with a uniquely common bond. We like that it hurts. We like being nervous before it starts. We like the fact that there’s no way to negotiate around hard-work. Every day…consistent, hard work.
I’m excited to join the OBA family. I’m excited to learn about our members. I’m excited to share my knowledge and methods with any and all athletes looking to improve.

Margie is a South Jersey native turned Brooklyn resident who is excited to be back in the City of Brotherly Love! Margie’s first fitness love was yoga. After adding cardio kickboxing to her routine, she found the perfect complement to the mobility and strength training of her yoga practice. After teaching kickboxing in Cherry Hill and then Manhattan, she became a HIIT coach and the manager of ICE NYC Crossfit. Using Crossfit equipment (sans barbells) to program her HIIT classes, she found the mix she’d been looking for. Margie is one of the founding trainers and the program design manager at BEAST:Fitness Evolved in Park Slope Brooklyn. If she’s not in the gym or yoga studio (or on a beach, her FAVORITE place) you’ll find her experimenting in her kitchen! She loves to cook and is interested in a healthy, whole foods approach to nutrition (with a cheat day here and there of course). Margie brings a warm smile and a fierce coaching style to her classes and loves being back home in THE city!!!

Hi! I’m Emily! I started CrossFit in 2015 and absolutely fell in love with the community surrounding it. Going to the gym since then has been the best part of my day. I love being a part of something bigger than myself that aims to make the world a happier and healthier place. As a coach these are my main goals. I want all of my athletes to become the happiest and healthiest versions of themselves that they can be, and I also want the time my athletes spend in the gym with me to be the best hour of their day.
My specialties are in gymnastics and olympic weightlifting. I compete nationally for olympic lifting, and gymnastics movements help me to stay flexible and strong for my sport. I am obsessed with handstand walking so if you ever see someone upside down at the gym that’s probably me!
I share a fun fact before all of my classes, so if you know of any weird trivia come find me!

I started CrossFit in 2012 at a globo gym in Northfield, NJ. My first workout was Fran – using terrible technique to do kipping pullups and thrusters with 25lb metal plates. Eight minutes and a meeting with Mr. Pukie later, I was hooked. I graduated from Old Dominion University in 2015 with a degree in Maritime and Supply Chain Management then moved to Philly in December 2015.
I love the constant challenges and community that CrossFit brings. My time in the gym is the best part of my day. As a coach, I love being able to help members reach their goals and lead them to better health and performance.
CrossFit gave me hope that I can be physically active again. Prior to finding CrossFit in 2013 - I was a highly active and healthy person, even playing Division 1 field hockey in college. But I began having odd health symptoms before graduating that turned chronic and debilitating. One of my side effects prevented me from being able to run without being in pain or losing my vision! I saw every doctor and had every test done, imaginable. It was CrossFit that came into my life that finally gave me hope. It was the first physical activity that made complete sense to me. It was something that I could do at my pace and level of ability and even bring back that familiar feeling of sport.
My health journey only propelled me deeper into my passion of helping others find health and wellness that’s sustainable for life. I started working in the fitness industry part time 7 years ago, eventually transitioning from a life in the medical field to health, fitness, and nutrition, full-time. Experiencing first hand and watching others go through a life of sickness, makes me proud to be on the front line of prevention.
